MIM-KAS Economic Discourse
"Managing Multiracialism Through A New Economic Agenda"

by
YBhg Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim

INTRODUCTION

Malaysia's unique selling point is in its multi-cultural populace. With 27 millions residents of Malay, Chinese, Indian, indigenous and other minority racial backgrounds, the Malaysian workforce which is multi-lingual, multi-cultural and which possesses a high degree of adaptability has more advantages than those in other homogenous society in dealing with the many challenges posed by an increasingly globalised world which caused for workers with multiple language and adaptability skills.

Since its independence from British colonial rule in 1957, Malaysia has become a model nation in the Asia Pacific region due to its people's ability to rely on each other's strengths. Its public policy coupled with strong leadership has driven Malaysia to become one of the most thriving nations in the newly democratised world.

  • How has Malaysia's leadership exploited the nation's rich human resource?

  • How has Malaysia's economy been developed in the past 50 years and how shall it be developed into the next 50 years?

  • Is what has been working in the past necessarily been useful for managing the future?

  • Is there a need for a new economic agenda? If yes, what should this new economic agenda be?

These are questions most management leaders would ask.
