A CEOs' Breakfast Briefing On "Management By Projects: The 21st Century Method Of
Delivering Results & Not Excuses In Any Organisation"
Address by : YABhg Tun Haji Mohd Hanif Bin Omar, President MIM
Date: 11 June 2003
It is indeed my pleasure to welcome all of you this morning to today's CEOs' Breakfast
Briefing on "Management by Projects... The 21st Century Method of Delivering
Results and Not Excuses in Any Organisation."
In today's New Economy, companies are
recognising the urgency of moving from a functional structure in their organisation to one
that is project-based. The impetus for this has come from "time to market"
considerations, the need to focus on core competencies, and for a customer-focused,
market-based approach to its activities.
Today, project management is used globally by
multi-billion-dollar corporations, governments, and smaller organisations alike as a means
of meeting their customers' or constituents' needs by both standardising and reducing the
basic tasks necessary to complete a project in the most effective and efficient manner. As
a result, project management leadership is a highly desirable and sought-after skill as
intense global competition demands that new projects and business development be
completed on time and within budget.
Today, virtually everything in business is project-related.
Project management breaks down the chaos of an overwhelming workload into manageable
elements, scope, time, costs, quality, human resources, communication, risk, procurement,
and integration. Any organisation serious about adopting the management by projects
approach or even simply delivering a couple of major projects using project management
techniques and processes, needs to be serious about education, training, and learning.
Organisations in Malaysia ought to recognise the
importance of project management as a key strategy to achieving relevance and
sustainability in today's global economy. In view of its importance, the Malaysian Institute
of Management is pleased to collaborate with Management Concepts Asia Pacific to
provide internationally recognised project management education and training, in order to
train Project Managers to an internationally recognised level of certification.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we are honoured to have Mr. Alan
Patching to address us this morning. Mr Patching is the Executive Chairman of Management
Concepts Asia Pacific and a world-recognised authority on leadership and project
management (he was Owner's CEO and Project Director of Sydney's Olympic Stadium
development). He consults to both government and industry world wide on getting the best
results and fewer excuses through the effective use of project
management.
