Address by : Dr Wilson Tay
Date : 20 January 2006

Ladies and Gentlemen, good morning and welcome to the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM)!

Dr Wilson Tay, CEO of MIM delivering his Welcome Address at the HR Forum

Thank you for your presence here today at MIM's first HR Forum for this year. We are much encouraged by your presence because it heartens us to know that you and your organisation are committed towards developing your human capital and talent, which is also what MIM is all about - to facilitate the continuous development, management and enhancement of human capital in Malaysian organisations.

Before I proceed, let me give you a brief introduction about myself.

I joined MIM as the Chief Executive Officer on 15 November last year. So far, it had been an exciting experience for me as I have always believed that "Outstanding leaders stand on the shoulders of excellent managers" and MIM is the premier avenue for the development of quality management leaders.

Prior to joining MIM, I have had a career spanning 3 decades in Australasia and Malaysia with Education, Industries and Government. With the experience and knowledge that I have had the privilege to gain, I am delighted to be a part of the vision of MIM as the national management organisation, to develop and enhance managerial practice and excellence in Malaysian organisations.

This year, MIM celebrates its 40th Anniversary. It is indeed a special year for all of us here at MIM.

After 4 decades of delivering management excellence, I am proud to say that MIM has grown in stature from its humble beginnings back in 1966, thanks to the support of all our members and organisations like yourselves who have placed their trust in MIM to deliver the management knowledge and experience that is vital to developing your organisation's managerial professionals.

The current business environment has experienced a transition, first from an Agricultural to Industrial then Technology and now Knowledge-based economy, requiring skilled knowledge workers who need to be globally aware and capable.

With the advent of globalisation and a borderless marketplace, there is an ever increasing market competition for all businesses, which in turn demands an increase in effectiveness, efficiency, productivity and innovation.

The future business environment will see an emergence of new industries requiring new competencies, skills and new ways of doing business. Never has so much been expected of managers and employees as their roles in organisations become more diversified.

Never has the management scene been as exciting and challenging as in this new global era.

At MIM, we believe that for organisations to stay relevant in today's evolving economy, they need to be resilient and be able to respond to rapid changes by strengthening their human capital capability.

The onus is on them to transform themselves to be learning organisations that are adaptive, having the ability to learn faster than their competition and are constantly innovating.

With this in mind, MIM has taken on a range of new initiatives to facilitate, train and develop a future workforce of empowered knowledge-workers who are able to work effectively and competently in multi-discipline teams.

Firstly, we have the MIM Talent Management Programme (MIM-TMP) which presents a comprehensive, holistic and competency-based management development programme designed to build organisational capability and personal competencies of managers and employees in the workplace. This programme enables organisations to effectively develop managerial leadership and competent managers to meet the challenges of the new industrial-technological and knowledge-based economy.

Secondly, we have also developed an online real-time tool called the MIM Compass, to assess organisational capability and individual work competencies and that helps HR identify capability and competency gaps for improvement.

Implemented together with the MIM-TMP, this package presents a powerful assessment, training and development pathway for organisations to derive greater return on their talent management investment.

I would like to take some time later this morning to bring you through the framework of the MIM-TMP and MIM Compass. After the session, if you are interested in a personal consultation for your organisation's training and development needs, our management team is on hand to assist you. Please approach us for an appointment and we will be glad to assist.

Thirdly, MIM is also introducing the Certified Trainer Facilitator (CTF) Programme, developed with the trainer in mind.

It is MIM's vision to provide a pool of certified trainer facilitators to Malaysian organisations to develop its human capital. This programme aims to further develop and enhance the knowledge of trainer facilitators, keeping them up-to-date on the latest management know-how and practices. Those who complete the programme successfully will become certified trainers, thus widening the pool of quality, home-grown trainers who will lead in developing and enhancing the skills of our managers to meet the challenges of this new economy.

Other programmes offered in MIM's training development this year also includes the Project Management programmes that MIM is collaborating together with our partner, Management Concepts Asia Pacific (MCAP) and Project Management Institute (PMIr).

There is still a dearth of certified Project Management Professionals (PMPrs) in Malaysia, and this year MIM has taken on a project initiated by the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC) to provide training and certification of project managers in the ICT industry. This, we hope, will further strengthen our country's economy and put Malaysia on the map as the world's leading ICT hub.

Other industries like insurance, telecommunications, construction, software development and so on can also derive the benefits of project management which has been gaining popularity in recent years due to the changing business environment.

Ultimately, MIM hopes to train and develop a pool of certified Project Management Professionals for all industries in Malaysia.

On another note, to those who are not yet members of MIM, I would like to invite you to join the MIM fraternity in our pursuit of managerial excellence and exchange of managerial knowledge and practice.

MIM provides an excellent avenue for the exchange of knowledge and learning through the MIM Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Talks which are conducted monthly and are extended free to members.

Besides this, there are many inherent membership privileges to further enhance your personal and professional managerial development. I urge you to join us and experience the world of management at MIM.

Before I end, I would like to take this opportunity to thank some members from our panel of trainer facilitators who are with us today to share their knowledge and expertise in the breakout sessions which will be held later this morning.

They are:
Mr Sasheedran Raman, who will facilitate the Marketing & Sales session;

Mr Mah Kong Howe, the Operations & Projects session;

Ms Aileen Koh, the Info Tech session;

Mr Victor Foo, the Nurturing Leaders session;

Mr Vincent Loh, the Finance session;

Ms Rita Krishnan, the P2P Communications session and last, but not least, Ms Evelyn Samuel, who will be taking over from me to share with you on maximising your organisation's human capital profitably. I hope that you will enjoy the sessions lined up for today, and hope that you will discover fresh ideas for a rewarding and successful year ahead, both for yourselves and your organisation.

Thank you.
