What is WiFi?
WiFi or Wireless Fidelity is a set of standards for wireless local area networks (WLAN)
that allows a person with a wireless-enabled computer system to connect to the Internet
within the environment of an access point called a "hotspot."
How do you pronounce the word WiFi?
WiFi is pronounced as "WyFy" (rhymes with "By")
How does it work?
WiFi is a cellular computer network that sends and receives data with radio signals
instead of wires. WiFi is used increasingly in both the home and office, and public areas
such as airports, coffee shops and university campuses. Innovative ways to utilize WiFi
technology are helping people to work and communicate more efficiently and effectively.
Increased mobility and with the absence of network cabling and other fixed infrastructure
have proven to be beneficial for many users.
How do I get it?
Just register as a member and you can sign up for this service for free.
Is this service available for Mac OS, Linux, Palm OS, Pocket PC...?
As the service is TCP/IP based, it supports most platforms including Mac OS, Linux, Palm
OS, Pocket PC and Windows.
What does it cost?
This service is FREE for all members of MIM.

USING WIFI
How do I start using WiFi?
To get started, sign up for this service at www.mim.org.my/wifi. Once
you receive your sign-up confirmation (via e-mail), you may then prepare your computer
system for this service. Please click here on how to configure your
computer system. You will have to be in MIM to use this service.

How do I activate my WiFi?
Upon proper configuration of your computer system, turn it on and open your web browser.
It will automatically detect the WiFi signal and prompt you for your login name and
password. Please key in your login name and password and you can begin surfing the
Internet.
How do I send instant messages?
Once you are connected to the Internet, open your instant messages system and begin to
send your messages.
How do I change my login name?
Your membership ID is your login name and you may not change it.
How do I change my password?
Passwords may not be changed.
Can I access my e-mail account using MIM's WiFi service?
Once you are connected to the Internet, you may access your web based e-mail accounts
Can I deactivate my account to use WiFi?
Deactivation of your account is not necessary. All sign-up information pertaining to your
WiFi account is kept strictly private and confidential
How do I uninstall WiFi?
Uninstalling of WiFi is not necessary. It is just a minor change to the network connection
of your system.
What do I need to use WiFi?
In short, practically all mobile devices purchased within the last 2-3 years will support
WiFi. Your mobile device will need to be fitted with a WiFi card.
I lost my password. How can I retrieve it?
You may contact MIM Customer Service and they will be happy to assist you in obtaining
your password.
I would like a new WiFi login name. What do I do?
Your membership ID will be your login name and you may not change it.
Can I use WiFi to send instant messages to my friends who use AOL/ICQ/Yahoo/MSN
Messenger?
Once you are connected to the internet, open your instant messages system and begin to
send your messages.
Where can I report bugs?
You may report bug concerns with the IT department and they will assist you in resolving
the problem.

How do I transfer a file with WiFi?
Once you are connected to the Internet, files can be transferred using your web-based
e-mail account.
What software do I need?
Your system will require a standard Windows operating system (95 and later) and a web
browser.
How do I receive a file?
Once you are connected to the Internet, you may receive files through your web-based
e-mail account .
Is there a limit to the size of the file I can send/receive?
No. The size of the files being transferred is only limited by bandwidth and your
available free hard disk space.
Can I send multiple files at the same time?
Once you are connected to the Internet, you may send multiple files at the same time using
your web-based e-mail account.
Can I get a virus with WiFi?
Just as with any Internet connections, files that are downloaded directly from the web,
precautions should be taken when accepting files from other parties. We highly recommend
that you use updated anti-virus software to scan all incoming files, even from people that
you know.
Why is my file transfer so slow?
There are several possible reasons why your file transfer speed is slow. First, this
service is on a shared basis. Depending on the number of users, the bandwidth is shared
among the users. Second, the bandwidth depends on the version of the wireless standard you
are using. 802.11a will give you up to 11 megabits while 802.11b will give you up to 22
megabits. Also, the file that you are downloading may be big in size and may take a little
longer to download.
TECHNICAL QUESTIONS
I can't access the Internet through WiFi. What's wrong?
There are several reasons for this. First, you may not have signed up for an account.
Visit www.mim.
/wifi to sign up. Second, your system may not be properly prepared.
What is the bandwidth of the WiFi service?
The bandwidth out to the Internet is 1.0 megabit.
How much bandwidth do I get using WiFi in MIM?
Depending on the version of the wireless protocol, 802.11a will get you up to 11 megabits
while 802.11b will get you up to 22 megabits of bandwidth.
PRIVACY QUESTIONS
Does WiFi contain any advertising or spyware?
No. We do recommend that you take precautions when downloading files directly from the
Internet.
Can I get a Trojan or virus from using this service?
As with other Internet connections, viruses or Trojans are all out there. We recommend
that you use the latest update of anti-virus software.
How can I block unwanted spyware and viruses?
MIM has taken all necessary precautions in blocking the more common spyware and viruses.
We still recommend that you use the latest updates of anti-virus and spyware removal
software.
Are my sign-up information public?
All information given to MIM for the purpose of WiFi sign-up is kept strictly private and
confidential.
Is your WiFi service secure?
Yes. When you are connected to the Internet through this service, your connection is
encrypted with strong encryption algorithms, ensuring you privacy.
Why is your WiFi encrypted?
This is to ensure that your privacy is protected against hacking and unauthorized use of
this service.
