CEO's New Year's Message

“Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be.
But what will happen in all the other days that ever come can depend on what you do today.”

– Ernest Hemingway

Each New Year presents us with a point in time to look back, take stock of what we’ve done for the year gone by, the pluses and minuses, which provides us with learning and incentive to move forward, wiser for the experience and able to give a better account of ourselves in the year ahead.

The pace of change is rapid and increasingly so and we, as an organisation dedicated to assist business cope, have to keep pace and even look at the crystal ball with the help of all the experts, management gurus, trendsetters and think tanks out there.

We need our own sense of achievement to drive us as an organisation. It is in this vein that I’ve taken stock of what MIM has done to justify our presence the past year and what we need and must do for giving meaning to our existence as we look ahead.

We must see ourselves as a pathfinder for the business community looking for answers in the maze of business practices and technology as it evolves, or in today’s parlance, disrupts, putting a strain on thinking and resources.

As I pen this message, I’m excited about the new initiatives you will soon see from the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) in 2019.

Industry Relevant Events
The year 2018 ended on a sweet note for MIM with the launch of the much talked about Inaugural Dr Mahathir Leadership Series which was officiated by our Prime Minister himself. Many media representatives, both local and international, sat in rapt attention listening to Tun Mahathir deliver his keynote address to over 700 invited guests. It was centred on trustworthiness and integrity as the cornerstone of any administration that had the interest of people at heart.

He also endorsed the importance of this National Management Institution in driving management excellence forward.

The Inaugural Dr Mahathir Leadership Series marked the end of a string of successful events launched by MIM in 2018, which included conferences on Agile, Coaching, the Future of HR, Governance and more. These events brought together industry practitioners from various sectors and equipped them with insights on how they can lead in a fast-changing world.

Going into 2019, you can look forward to more industry relevant events, starting off with Leadership Asia, the Asian Association of Management Organizations’ (AAMO) 20th Triennial Conference taking place in the first quarter, followed by the TAR Lecture® series, which last year had The Permaisuri of Johor, Raja Zarith Sofiah Sultan Idris Shah, delivering the royal keynote address and the 2nd instalment of the Dr Mahathir Leadership Series.

Pioneering New Ventures
MIM continues to venture beyond local shores through our International Business Unit, which in 2018 successfully facilitated training in new markets, including Nepal, Indonesia and Yemen. Cultivating sustainable partnerships is critical with our international partners and last year marked a significant milestone for MIM through an MOU with the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM), as it provided a new opportunity to foster better business collaboration between nations.

The year 2019 will see MIM continuing to support the learning and development initiatives of our international partners and expand its reach to new markets including the Philippines, Oman, Bahrain, Dubai and Brunei.

Locally, we intend to strengthen our focus on raising the management standards of the public sector as we continue to fulfil the institution’s purpose.

In the pipeline for this year also is the launch of MIM’s very own certification programmes which includes the Certified Professional Manager & Leader and Certified Public Manager Programmes.

A Community of Professionals
As we venture forth into 2019, I would like to give my heartiest thanks to our members who have helped us grow for over 50 years to become the strong organisation we are today.

I am also pleased to note that last year we were able to add to our membership benefits, enabling us to give our members exclusive discounts for our signature events and even launching new lifestyle offers.

Our focus this year will be on several digital initiatives to enhance the lives of MIM Members, including an e-card for members and an online portal for access to Management magazine on the go. In addition, look forward to more exclusive members-only events and benefits to be announced soon!

As we enter into 2019, I cannot help but feel a sense of pride in the growth of the MIM brand. Just as the institution continues to grow, I wish the same for your personal journey. Are you willing to make every day of 2019 count? Perhaps this quote from the late Ernest Hemingway may inspire…

“Today is only one day in all the days that will ever be. But what will happen in all the other days that ever come can depend on what you do today.”
