Your Excellencies
The Court of Emeritus Fellows
Distinguished Guests,
and MIM family members,
Ladies and gentlemen.
It is with profound gratitude and great pride that I welcome all of you this evening as we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Malaysian Institute of
Management.
Sixty years is a rare achievement.
Diamonds are formed under pressure. In that respect, institutions are not so different.
Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) has faced change, uncertainty and difficult moments. Yet through every period, it has remained guided by one enduring purpose: to strengthen management, develop capable leaders and contribute to the progress of Malaysia.
“A Diamond Jubilee does not merely mark the passage of time. It marks the preservation of purpose.”
Tonight, we celebrate the people who protected that purpose and carried it forward across six decades.
Your Royal Highness,
When MIM was founded in 1966, Malaysia was still in the early years of nation building.
Our industries were developing. Our economy was evolving. Professional management was only beginning to emerge as an important discipline.
MIM’s founders understood that a nation’s success would never depend only on infrastructure, natural resources or economic policy.
It would ultimately depend on the quality of its leaders—their competence, integrity, judgment and willingness to serve. That belief became the
foundation of MIM.
Over the past six decades, MIM has been privileged to accompany Malaysia through its modern development.
Many of Malaysia’s Prime Ministers have engaged with the Institute through national dialogues, leadership forums and keynote addresses. Our Royal Institutions have also graced many of MIM’s defining milestones.
These relationships reflect a shared conviction:
Strong nations require strong institutions.
And strong institutions require leaders of integrity, competence and vision.
To date, MIM has empowered more than one million professionals and over 5,000 organisations.
But the true legacy of MIM cannot be measured only through numbers, programmes or publications.
It is measured through people.
Some came to MIM to learn.
Some returned to teach.
And many came back to lead.
“The greatest legacy of an institution is not what it keeps for itself, but what it develops in others.”
As the first woman to serve as President of MIM, I accept this responsibility with humility and with deep respect for everyone who built the path before me.
My responsibility is not simply to preserve MIM’s history.
It is to ensure that this history remains relevant to the future.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We are entering an age of extraordinary technological change. Artificial intelligence is transforming industries, organisations and the nature of work. Access to information has never been easier. But information is not education.
“Information can be accessed. Education must be experienced.”
True education happens through interaction—between peers, practitioners, faculty, mentors and trusted advisers.
It develops judgment.
It shapes character.
And it teaches us how to make responsible decisions when there are no easy answers.
Artificial intelligence can strengthen human capability. It can help us analyse information, identify patterns and work more efficiently. But speed is not the same as wisdom.
“AI can accelerate decisions, but it cannot assume responsibility for
them.”
Responsibility remains human.
So do integrity, empathy, moral courage and the ability to earn trust.
This is why MIM’s mission remains as important today as it was in 1966.
Our role is not simply to provide more information.
Our role is to help leaders make sense of complexity, lead responsibly and bring people together through change.
Malaysia also has an important role to play in the future of leadership development.
We understand the complexity of ASEAN—its different cultures, markets, institutions, relationships and ways of building trust.
Global knowledge is valuable, but it must be connected to the realities of our region.
“Malaysia can help translate global knowledge into ASEAN wisdom.”
This is also how I see the next chapter of MIM.
We do not need to compete with the largest global institutions on scale.
“MIM’s next chapter is not about competing on scale. It is about leading
through relevance.”
Relevance means understanding what organisations and professionals need today.
It means supporting young managers entering leadership for the first time, while also honouring the experience and institutional wisdom of senior
leaders.
It means seeing our members not as one-time participants, but as lifelong partners in learning.
Participants can become contributors.
Contributors can become advisers.
Advisers can become ambassadors.
That is how leadership continuity is built.
And in a world that often feels divided, MIM can provide something increasingly valuable: a place of unity in education, where generations, industries and perspectives can learn from one another.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
This evening, we also honour those whose leadership and service have become an important part of MIM’s distinguished history.
The Court of Emeritus Fellow is the highest honour bestowed by the Malaysian Institute of Management.
It recognises individuals whose contributions have gone beyond professional achievement. They have demonstrated wisdom, integrity, stewardship and a deep commitment to strengthening the institutions and communities they have served.
True leadership is never defined by position alone.
It is defined by the trust we earn, the people we develop and the legacy we leave behind.
To all our Court of Emeritus Fellows, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and appreciation.
Your leadership has enriched MIM and contributed meaningfully to Corporate Malaysia and to our nation.
Tonight’s celebration also belongs to everyone who has contributed to this remarkable journey:
Our visionary founders.
Our Past Presidents.
Council Members.
Our MIM family members.
Our dedicated Secretariat and staff, past and present. Our corporate partners, government agencies, universities, sponsors and supporters. Thank you.
I would like to make a special acknowledgement of our Vice-President, Dato’ Ng Tieh Chuan, Chairman of the Dinner Organising Committee
Dato’ Ng, your many years of dedication to MIM, your deep knowledge of the Institute and your tireless commitment to this Diamond Jubilee have been invaluable.
I also extend my sincere appreciation to our Chairman, Datuk Zainal Amanshah, the Board of Directors, the organising committee and everyone who has worked to make this evening possible.
As managers, we are very fond of planning. But anyone who has ever organised a Royal Gala Dinner knows that management theory is sometimes easier than the seating plan.
Thank you for managing both with such commitment and care.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Every generation has inherited an Institute built by those who came before.
Our responsibility is to strengthen that legacy and leave it stronger for those who will follow.
That is stewardship.
That is leadership.
And that is the enduring promise of the Malaysian Institute of Management.
Before I conclude, allow me once again to express our deepest appreciation to Duli Yang Maha Mulia Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj and Duli Yang Maha Mulia Tengku Permaisuri Selangor for graciously honouring us with their presence this evening.
Your Royal Highness, your enduring support—from MIM’s 35th Anniversary celebration to this historic Diamond Jubilee—will forever remain part of the
Institute’s proud history.
May the Almighty continue to bless Their Royal Highnesses with abundant health, wisdom and joy.
To every member, partner and friend of MIM, thank you for helping write the first sixty years of this remarkable story.
Together, let us build the next chapter with courage, integrity, relevance and purpose.
“Strong leadership builds strong organisations. And strong organisations help build a stronger nation.”
Thank you.
Ampun Tuanku
